Using a car cover is important because it helps to protect the exterior of a vehicle from damage caused by weather elements such as rain, snow, dust, and also to protect it from any accidental bumps or scratches.
Recently I began to search for the best car covers to see what was available out there and to find a few different options that I could use on my Volvo, Mercedes, and BMW.
In this post I want to share some of my recommendations and go over the details of the different options that I came across.
I think that it’s a good idea to use a car cover because it keeps the paint and the exterior of the car relatively free from damage caused by unsavory weather elements and I even cover the car in my garage so that I don’t accidentally scratch it while I’m walking by.
Keep in mind that if a tree branch falls onto the roof of your beautiful vehicle then it’s likely going to cause damage with or without a cover but it should be fine if there’s heavy rain, hail, snow, and any other weather patterns that could damage the paint or windows.
One thing to remember is that there are a wide variety of different covers available and it’s a good idea to check to see if the one that you’re interested in is actually going to fit your car.
Let’s take a look at some of my recommendations.
The Best Car Covers
Classic Accessories PolyPro III Heavy Duty Full Size Sedan Car Cover
The Classic Accessories PolyPro III Heavy Duty Full Size Sedan Car Cover is one of my top recommendations when it comes to the best outdoor car cover.
Depending on the size of your sedan it comes in three different sizes and can fit a vehicle anywhere between up to 175-inches and 210-inches in length.
The cover is made from a triple ply PolyPro fabric that has been designed to repel against rain, snow, and other moisture based weather elements.
It also offers ample protection against scratches, dirt, debris, and pollution so that you’re able to better maintain the exterior paint job of your vehicle.
The bottom of the cover comes equipped with an elasticized bottom hem and this helps to keep it fitted on while preventing it from blowing around or moving around too much while it’s covering the car.
Even better keep the cover in place there’s the possibility to use tie-down grommets and a rope for even further security and attachment of the cover.
One feature I really like about this cover is that it comes with a zippered driver’s side door entrance and this makes it easy to access the interior of the car without having to take off the entire cover.
Overall, I find that the Classic Accessories PolyPro III Heavy Duty Full Size Sedan Car Cover is a great cover to use if you’re looking for one that is easy to setup and offers all season protection.
Leader Accessories Basic Guard Cover
For anyone looking to use an indoor car cover it’s the Leader Accessories Basic Guard Cover that I would recommend checking out.
This one is available for a wide range of different cars, pickup trucks, SUVs, and even minivans so it’s very likely that you’ll be able to find one that will fit your car or truck regardless of its size or make.
I recommend this cover for indoor use because it’s made from a breathable material that allows the car to stay reasonably ventilated while it’s covered and the cover also offers UV protection if you want to use it for outdoor storage, although it’s not as good as some of my other recommendations when it comes to all season weather protection.
Around the bottom of the cover is an elastic hem that helps it to maintain a snug fit over the car and there’s also an included storage bag so that it can be put away in an organized fashion when it’s not being used.
Leader Accessories Xtreme Guard Waterproof Car Cover
The Leader Accessories Xtreme Guard Waterproof Car Cover Can be used for both indoor and outdoor use and is designed from a breathable fabric that allows for suitable air circulation to help prevent any moisture or condensation from building up.
The material offers resistance against UV rays and offers ample water protection to protect the exterior of your car from rain, snow, and other moisture based weather elements.
It’s designed with three layers of polypropylene along with one layer of a waterproof film and another layer that offers a UV coating for ultimate protection.
There is a wide range of different sizes available for coverage and it’s possible to find one that will fit cars anywhere between up to 157-inches to 264-inches in length.
At the bottom of the cover is an elastic hem and this helps to prevent leaves and other debris from blowing up into the cover while ensuring that it stays fit on the vehicle during windy days.
OxGord Executive Storm-Proof Car Cover
The OxGord Executive Storm-Proof Car Cover is a cover that offers 7 Layers of protection and is designed to fit sedans anywhere between up to 144-inches and 229-inches in length.
It comes equipped with a stretchy elastic hem along with drawstrings that can be used to tighten the fit of the cover on the car to help prevent any leaves or other debris from blowing up inside and to keep it fit in place.
The seams have been reinforced for extra strength protection and there are even tie-down grommets that can be used to further secure the cover during extreme weather patterns such as high winds or storms.
On the interior is a soft cotton material that helps to prevent the cover from scratching or damaging the car’s paint finish and tt even comes with a storage bag so that it can be stored away when not in use or made portable to bring with the car.
Budge Lite Car Cover
The Budge Lite Car Cover is suitable to use for both indoor and short-term outdoor use and is available in 5 different sizes depending on the length of your car.
This cover is made from just one layer of polypropylene and offers a basic level of protection against light weather elements, wind, and accidental scratches or bumps caused by people walking by.
Since it’s such a lightweight cover it can be easily handled and it’s quite portable so I can be left in the trunk and used when the need arises.
The material that it’s made from is 100% breathable and this helps to prevent any moisture or condensation from building up and leading to any problems with mold or mildew.
Thanks to the full elastic hem the cover can be put on and left to remain in place and the built-in grommets can be used for even further secure attachment during windy conditions.
I would definitely recommend checking out the Budge Lite Car Cover if you’re looking for a cover to use mostly indoors or one that offers ample protection against light rain, UV, and dust or debris from windy days.
Why You Should Use a Car Cover
Many people don’t have access to a garage or covered parking area and because of this their vehicle is left outside where it’s exposed to all of the elements throughout the year.
During the summer the exterior and interior of the car are going to be continually under the path of strong UV rays and this can cause the paint to fade, interior plastic or vinyl components to break down, and lead to hot seats that aren’t enjoyable to sit down on.
When it rains the water and moisture will make its way over the entire exterior and can eventually erode and break down any unprotected areas or sensitive spots on the car body.
When it dries, rainwater will also cause spotting and can be difficult to remove without washing the car.
When the wind is blowing quite heavily there is a lot of debris and contaminants in the wind and this is continuously driven into the exterior of the car where it has a degrading and abrasive effect that can slowly break down the paint.
Apart from the weather elements there was also a wide range of other hazards such as bird droppings, tree sap, and stones kicked up by passing cars that can damage the exterior of your vehicle.
Even someone walking by can accidentally fall onto your car and scratch it or drop whatever they’re carrying and damage the paint job.
Given enough time all of these different things can degrade, dull, prematurely age, and corrode the exterior vehicle and the paintwork.
Vehicles kept indoors also aren’t immune to dust, falling objects, liquids spilling, and other debris that can be found indoors and if you have a classic car that has thin or fragile paint and exterior then leaving it exposed can quickly become a problem.
Using a quality car cover can actually help to extend the lifespan of your car while still helping it retain much of its original value.
When it’s time to sell your car you can show anyone that’s interested that it has been kept under a cover and this could actually help with the final sale as it would show them that you’re someone that has cared for the vehicle during your ownership of it.
Having a cover can also help to protect against theft and vandalism because it’s just one more thing that a thief or vandal have to fiddle around with and this could increase the chance of them being caught.
These days the different covers available are made using materials that are durable, friendly to the paintwork, and offer protection against the outdoor elements.
They’re also quite easy to put on, remove, and in many cases they can be stored in the trunk or in the garage without taking up too much space.
In the end it’s alternately up to you to decide whether or not it’s worth it to use a car cover but in the long run I would argue that it’s definitely worth it and if you’re not already using one I would insist that you consider the benefits.
