Whether you’re a homeowner doing your own work around the house, heading out into the woods for some camping, or you just like having necessary tools around just in case then you likely know that having a sturdy, reliable, and durable shovel is a necessary tool.
The problem with regular shovels is that they’re bulky, heavy, unwieldy, and it’s a pain in the butt to bring them anywhere.
Even in the case of an emergency it’s not that reasonable to think you can just leave a full-size shovel in the car or in an emergency kit in case something goes wrong.
Thankfully there are collapsing shovels, also known as a folding shovel, that are much smaller, more portable, and can be folded up or collapsed into a smaller size.
These shovels don’t take up as much space and they’re a lot easier to leave in the car, at the cottage, or even bring with you car camping just in case you think you might need it.
I recently began searching for the best folding shovel to add to my collection of tools and in this post I want to share some of my recommendations for some different options I think you should take a look at.
Well, let’s take a look at some of my recommendations on what I believe are models that are well-suited if you’re in the market for the best collapsing shovel.
The Best Folding Shovel
Gerber E-Tool Folding Spade
When it comes to folding and portable shovels my top recommendation is the Gerber E-Tool Folding Spade.
It takes advantage of a heavy-duty design and durable construction while still being portable and a small profile for easy storage and carrying.
The shaft is made from an anodized aluminum that helps to keep it lightweight while still ensuring that it’s strong, sturdy, and durable for use.
The handle is constructed using a glass-filled nylon design and offers plenty of room for gripping the handle and getting a good grip on it when you’re digging or using it for another purpose.
The head is made from a powder-coated steel and there is even a serrated edge that’s helpful for getting through natural materials such as plants, undergrowth, vines, and sticks and it can also help with digging through hard dirt and ice.
When it’s opened up the shovel expands to 2-feet in length and can be completely collapsed and folded into a very small profile for portability and storage.
To help keep the shovel open and secure when you’re using it there’s a nifty locking mechanism so that it will remain open during use.
The functionality, design, portability, and ease-of-use of the Gerber E-Tool Folding Spade is why it’s one of my top recommendations if you’re looking for a folding shovel for your outdoor needs.
SOG Entrenching Tool F08-N
Similar to the Gerber, the SOG Entrenching Tool F08-N is another one of my recommendations if you’re looking for a quality and durable folding shovel.
This model takes advantage of a tri-fold design that makes it more portable as well as allows it to take on a smaller profile for storage or transport.
One nifty feature is that it’s possible to rotate the blade so it can be used as a standard shovel, as a pick, or as a hoe depending on your needs and preferences.
The handle takes on a triangular design and is easy to grip while offering ample grip for leverage.
The entire thing is made from a tempered steel that helps to keep it sturdy and also durable for when you need it.
With the serrated teeth on the edge of the shovel blade you can also use it for cutting any natural materials like grass, branches, overgrowth, and it can also be used to chipping away at ice or bashing into hard-packed dirt.
To make it even easier to carry and more portable the SOG Entrenching Tool F08-N comes with its own carrying case that even have gear loops for further portability and ease-of-use.
Survival Hax Survival Shovel
The Survival Hax Survival Shovel is designed with a steel handle and shovel head along with an aluminum alloy bolt so it’s durable and well-equipped for heavy duty use.
It can be used as a shovel or you can take advantage of the built-in pick if you need to bust up any hard materials or loosen up the ground before you start digging.
One interesting feature is that it even comes equipped with a hidden fire starter that you can use in case of any emergencies, making this a great additional to a survival kit.
One on side of the shovel head is a serrated edge and this is helpful for cutting through any natural materials like grass, overgrowth, or branches.
When not needed the shovel can be folded down into a small, more portable size as the shape of its own trowel and it even comes with a carrying case for better organization and more portability.
AAA 4004 Sport Utility Shovel
The AAA 4004 Sport Utility Shovel boasts a fairly simple design and takes advantage of an aluminium construction to help keep it lightweight while still being sturdy and durable.
At just 1.3 pounds in weight this is a very light shovel.
There are a few different colors to choose from depending on your preferences and this shovel makes a great addition to any survival kit or just to leave in your vehicle in case of any emergencies.
When it’s disassembled there are three separate pieces that allow it to take up a smaller profile when it’s not being used and to make it easier for storage and portability.
The T-handle allows for ample grip and leverage and despite not having too many extra features like some of my other recommendations in this post the AAA 4004 Sport Utility Shovel is still an option that I would recommend checking out.
SE Stainless Steel Folding Trowel
The SE Stainless Steel Folding Trowel is what I would recommend taking a look at if you don’t need a full size shovel and you’re just looking for something ultra-portable that’s still durable and sturdy.
This model is much smaller than my other recommendations and I find it to be well-suited for camping, gardening, and just to have something lightweight around in case of an emergency in the car or something.
The blade and the handle are made from a heavy gauge stainless steel and this makes it very durable and also resistant to rust and corrosion.
It comes with a carrying pouch that makes it easier to carry around, more portable, and the handle features a loop design so I can be hung up for storage and quick accessibility when it’s not in use.
Coleman Folding Shovel
When it comes to camping gear Coleman is well known for their entry level options and it’s the Coleman Folding Shovel that they have available for those looking for a portable collapsible shovel for outdoor use.
This model makes a suitable choice to add into an emergency kit or just to bring along the next time you’re going camping.
It takes advantage of a durable steel design and the shovel head comes equipped with a serrated edge so it can also be used for sawing and cutting natural materials outdoors.
When you’re using it the different pieces lock into place so that it possible to get leverage using the handle for digging and when it’s not being used it can be collapsed and folded down into a smaller size.
Whether you’re heading out into the outdoors to get some camping done or you just need to bulk up your emergency kit, folding shovels can be very useful in a wide variety of different situations.
I hope that my different recommendations in this post have helped you find a suitable collapsing shovel for your needs and if not then hopefully this post has acted as a good starting point for your own research in regards to finding the best folding shovels.
