Having been working in an office setting for more than 4 years lower back pain seemed like a regular occurrence in my life and I thought I would never be able to get rid of it.
Well, after using a laptop stand and a dedicated ergonomic keyboard for my office setup along with switching my standard office chair into a kneeling chair I began to feel better and my symptoms from lower back pain to carpal tunnel started to go away.
However, I couldn’t avoid office chairs forever so I begin to look for the best lumbar support for office chair use so I could help to better manage my back pain whenever I needed to use a regular chair.
The Best Lumbar Support for Office Chairs
In this post I want to share some of my different recommendations that I came across during my search for the best lumbar supports for office chairs.
After going over the different options that I suggest I’ll also go into a little bit of a helpful buying guide with some helpful tips and information.
The Duro-Med Relax-A-Bac is a lumbar support pillow that offers support and relief in the lower back while promoting a healthy and ergonomic seating position.
This was one of the first options that I seriously considered and it really helps to make sure that you’re sitting up straight in a better posture rather than slouching over and placing a lot of unnecessary strain on the lower back.
It works quite simply and after being positioned on the chair it can even be attached using an elastic strap to keep it in place and prevent it from moving around too much.
Alternatively, it’s lightweight and portable enough that it can be used on the couch and even if you’re sitting up in the bed watching TV or using some tech devices.
The way it works is by taking advantage of an orthopedic design that helps to keep the spine in a proper alignment and relieves the tension and stress placed on the lower back area.
It’s made of a molded foam and there’s some increased support that’s added by a composite board insert which helps to make it firmer and to keep you in place upright in a better seating position.
There are a few different colors available to choose from depending on your preferences and it even comes equipped with a removable cover that can be washed so that it can be kept smelling fresh.
SimplePosture Lower Back Pain Relief Lumbar Support Pillow
The SimplePosture Lower Back Pain Relief Lumbar Support Pillow is another option that I took a look at while looking for something suitable to use with my office chair.
It works by supporting your lower back while sitting down and helps to keep your spine’s natural position so that there isn’t any unnecessary strain or pressure put on that part of your body while you’re sitting down.
Thanks to the adjustable strap it can be kept in place on the office chair without it moving around every time you sit down and it’s also quite small and compact so it’s portable and can be used while you’re traveling and even in the car.
The support features a breathable mesh design that helps to keep it from being too warm or too sweaty to use after sitting for a while and it’s odorless so there isn’t any of that funky chemical smell that you can sometimes find with pillows.
ZIRAKI Memory Foam Cushion
The ZIRAKI Memory Foam Cushion boasts a very unique design and takes advantage of memory foam to be comfortable while offering ample support for the back while seated.
On the front of it is a unique cooling gel pad that’s made using gel packets that improve ventilation and are said to provide instant cooling rather than being too hot and sweaty to use.
Another interesting feature is that it comes with 2 different covers, one black mesh one and the other is a plush grey velvet, that you can use depending on your office design and current preferences.
Most importantly this support can be used to straighten and promote a better posture while offering ample support that helps to promote the natural arc of the lower back.
Personally, I really like the ZIRAKI Memory Foam Cushion because the cooling gel pad helps to prevent my back from sweating and the memory foam is comfortable while still offering suitable support.
The Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll
The Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll is interesting because rather than taking on the shape of a pillow it’s actually designed much more like a roll or even a lot depending on your imagination.
Its narrow design makes it quite portable so it can be used on an office chair just as easily as being able to use it in a car or even while on the bus or plane.
To make it even easier to travel with it’s built with a handle attached to the role itself and this also acts as a way to attach it to an office chair and keep it in place.
The roll itself is made from a foam material and comes with a removable cover that’s polyester and moisture wicking so it doesn’t get too hot after using it for an extended period.
Depending on your preferences you might be better off with a pillow style of support but I really like the Original McKenzie Lumbar Roll because it can be focused to provide relief in a more specific area and it’s also very portable so I find it easy to bring along with me wherever I’m going.
Fellowes Professional Series Back Support
The Fellowes Professional Series Back Support is one that offers support to more than just the lumbar and lower back area.
The design of this one means it offers both lower lumbar support and mid spinal support so that anyone using it is able to take advantage of a wider range of back support to help with a natural and neutral posture seating position.
The bottom lumbar area offers three different sections made from memory foam that aid with lower back support and the mid area Is also made from memory foam end helps keep the back supported while promoting an upright position and more comfort while seated.
To attach it to the office chair there is a buckle attachment system that keeps the support in place and that can also be adjusted depending on your preferences.
I quite like this support as it offers a full back support rather than just in the lumbar area and I would recommend checking it out if you’re looking for ample full back support while sitting in a standard office chair.
Lumbar Support Buyers Guide
When it comes to lumbar supports it’s a good idea to learn as much as possible as why the pain in your lower back is being caused and what can be done to fix it.
In case you’re not aware, the term lumbar refers to the lower portion of your back and more specifically it’s the lower five vertebrae positioned in your spine.
These vertebrae naturally bend slightly inward in a light curve and when you’re sitting down, especially with poor posture, a lot of pressure is placed on this area in your back.
Most lumbar supports help with supporting this section of the lower back and there are a wide variety of different options to choose from that vary in shape, size, and overall design.
These supports can be used anywhere that you’re sitting down whether it’s the chair at your office, the driver’s seat in your car, the seat on the train, or even on your couch.
These days you can actually find chairs that come with lumbar support that’s built into the design but I find that the best lumbar support for office chairs are usually purchased on their own while still being able to be used in a variety of different settings.
What Makes a Good Lumbar Support?
When it comes to finding a good lumbar support there are a few different features that you should look out for.
First of all, it should be quite comfortable to use while you’re sitting down.
You don’t want to feel any painful pressure points and it should be firm while still being comfortable enough to use for an extended period of time.
Also, since many people look for support to help alleviate lower back pain, there should be enough support in the lower back area that helps to promote a healthy posture and takes stress stress off the lumbar area while you’re sitting down.
The overall design of the support should also be considered and a good one will fit the shape of your spine so that the support itself is kept the flush against the small of your back.
One more feature to look out for is whether or not the support you’re interested in using is portable.
If you just need one for office chair then it doesn’t have to be as portable as one you’ll want to use at the office, in your car, and at home.
Finally, any support that you’re interested in should be made from a material that’s comfortable, durable, and comes with the cover that can either be washed or the support itself can be spot washed whenever it’s dirty.
What to Avoid
With so many different options to choose from it’s a good idea to make the effort to avoid any poor quality supports, which can actually cause more damage in the long run.
What makes a poor quality support?
Anything that seems poorly shaped or made with materials that seem subpar probably isn’t a good idea to go with and also anything that doesn’t offer ample support should be avoided.
I would also recommend avoiding any built-in lumbar support because they aren’t nearly as portable and they don’t offer as much as structural support so they’re not as effective as the traditional ones that you can find.
How Does a Lumbar Support Work?
Most lumbar supports are very easy to use.
To start using it simply remove it from the packaging and then place it or attach it to the office chair or wherever you’re sitting in the lower back area where it can support your lower back effectively.
It works by doing 3 things:
- Reduces the amount of bending that your lower back has to do
- Supports and strengthens your spine while you’re sitting down
- Enforces and promotes a healthier and better overall posture
The way it does these things is by restricting the amount of lower back movement you have while you’re sitting down so that your lower back is essentially forced into a more upright and healthier overall position.
This restriction of lower back movement might seem unusual but it actually helps to enforce a good back position without much effort on your part at all.
The curved of the shape of lumbar supports is what helps to reduce the overall bending of your spine and it keeps it naturally curve without leading to any unnatural bending or awkward movements while you’re seated.
Over time the muscles in your back will begin to strengthen and you’ll soon be able to take advantage of a good posture sitting position naturally without having to rely on any support.
The Benefits of Lumbar Support
There are quite a few benefits of using lumbar support, especially if you’re going to be sitting for extended periods of time.
Many people these days run into lower back pain issues, usually ones that can be prevented or dealt with in a straightforward manner.
Unfortunately for those in office jobs it can be hard to sit with proper posture for hours on end especially without learning how to sit properly and without any support at the beginning.
When we’re sitting down it feels quite natural to want to lean forward or lean back in the chair and slouch in an awkward position.
In the long run this leads to very bad posture and it can be a very hard habit to get rid of.
The problem with smoking is that it causes the lumbar to bend in an awkward angle and doesn’t allow it to rest naturally in a neutral and healthy position.
Any time that you are doing something that causes your back or your spine to curve a naturally for an extended period you’re actually putting a lot of unnecessary stress on your lower back.
This can lead to problems as muscles tighten, nerves become pinched, and the worst case scenario where vertebrae can actually become permanently restructured.
All of these issues can lead to chronic back pain and anyone that has suffered from back pain before probably knows why it’s a good idea to do whatever possible to alleviate it or cure the problem so that there isn’t any pain at all.
If you’re someone that suffers a from a lot of back pain or you feel it might start coming on then you should definitely consider investing in a lumbar support especially if you’re sitting down for long periods of time with poor posture.
Lumbar supports help to improve your overall posture and ensure that your back stays aligned in a natural position throughout the day without much effort on your part.
Using one of these supports can actually help to prevent further back problems from developing and leading to a much more serious issue.
Another benefit of these supports is that I find them to be quite reasonably priced, portable, and easy to use so there’s really no excuse to start using one if you’re looking for ways to improve your posture and alleviate some lumbar or lower back pain.

Are back braces and lumbar supports the same thing?
Lumbar supports and back braces are two completely different products that offer similar but still differing benefits.
Where back braces are useful to help people improve general posture a lumbar support is actually more designed to use for lower back and supporting the lumbar area while individuals are sitting down.
Back braces are also worn on the body while supports can be used quite easily where they’re placed onto a chair or other seating area.
