As you might know, if you have checked out any of the other ergonomics related posts on my site here, you’ll know that I suffer from quite a few problems with my lower back, neck, and wrists and over the years I’ve been able to mediate a lot of these issues by using a variety of different products that I recommend here.
One of the products that I recommend people use if they’re suffering from any pain from sitting down in a desk chair too long is kneeling chairs and today I want to talk about the different kneeling chair benefits and why you should use one if you’re spending the majority of your day on the computer at a desk.
These days there are quite a few people spending the entire day, up to 8 to 12 hours at a time, sitting with poor posture at a desk.
This continuous sitting along with the poor posture can place a lot of unwanted stress on the spine, joints, and muscles throughout the lower and upper body.
The problem is that people are just pushing through these issues and aren’t taking any of the necessary steps when it comes to prevention and in the long run this can lead to some pretty serious injuries.
Kneeling Chair Benefits
One of the main reasons that ergonomic chairs, such as kneeling chairs, were created was to make it easier to keep your spine in an upright, neutral position without you having to worry about it and stress about it throughout the day.
Since there isn’t any back support you’re actually more encouraged to stay aligned in a better, more posture friendly position without any serious effort on your part.
There’s also a more enhanced angle between the lower body and the torso that opens up more space in regards to the pelvic muscle tissues that are connected to the lower back so there isn’t as much pressure on the lumbar region and less stress is placed on the lower back over all.
Using one of these chairs you’re able to enjoy the benefits of better posture, improved health, and you hopefully don’t have to spend as much money at the chiropractor or visiting the doctor for many of the issues that you’re suffering from due to sitting down for so long with poor posture.
So that was just a quick look at the different benefits that a kneeling chair offers but let’s take a more in-depth look at the specific areas that you’ll see some improvement.
Relief from Back Pain
One of the quickest benefits that you’re likely to notice if you’re using a kneeling chair is the disappearance of back pain and lower back problems.
When you’re sitting in a normal office chair you’re placing a lot of pressure on your lower back, especially if you’re not following good posture techniques, and these chairs tend to be quite cramped and never in the right position as well.
When you’re sitting in a kneeling chair there’s a lot more room for your hips to spread out into a better position and this doesn’t cause the muscles in your hip or lower back to tighten up so you actually have a better range of movement and more comfort.
The problem with desk chairs is that a lot of pressure is placed on your lower back and this can cause the muscles in the area to weaken and cramp up which leads to long-term pain and discomfort when you’re sitting down.
Kneeling chairs help you to improve your posture and the angle of the seat forces you to sit straight up with a straight back since you no longer have the back of the seat for support.
With your legs in the right position and your hips properly aligned underneath you on the chair your back doesn’t have to work so hard to keep itself straight and without the back part of the chair to keep you upright you’re more likely to get reminded of sitting up straight and it’s easier to keep a better posture this way.
Many people after using these chairs for an extended period of time say that they’re actually more comfortable than using a regular office chair and that it’s a lot easier to maintain a better posture without having to rely on armrests or back support to stay upright.
Definitely one of my recommendations if you’re suffering from a lot of lower back pain is to head online and look for the best kneeling chair to use at your office so that you’re able to enjoy the relief that it provides.
Another one of the most noticeable benefits of using a kneeling chair is that when you’re sitting down it allows your spinal column to be properly aligned without as much effort on your part so that you’re able to enjoy a better and more improved posture when you’re sitting at a desk.
After a while your body will start to get used to sitting tall with an upright position and this posture improvement will carry over to other aspects of your life.
Eventually your back will remain straighter in a more natural and comfortable position whenever you’re sitting down, even if you’re not using a kneeling chair, and this posture will also show itself when you’re walking, sitting down at a couch or something, and just going about your day.
It might be surprising, considering how uncomfortable the chair looks, but when you’re kneeling using one of these chairs all day it’s actually a lot more comfortable compared to when you’re sitting in an awkward position using a desk chair.
All of the pressure that was previously placed on your lower back and upper hips is immediately alleviated and you won’t be hunching forward over your desk anymore when you’re sitting there so there’s also relief in the upper back, neck, and shoulders.
There are a few different ways that you can sit at a kneeling chair and it’s a good idea to try out a few different positions until you’re able to find the one that’s most comfortable and that gives you the most range of motion and best posture while you’re sitting down.
Strengthening of the Core Muscles
One of the biggest drawbacks when you’re sitting at a desk chair all day is that the back is fully supported by the backrest.
This results in the core muscles throughout your body not doing a lot of work and it’s one of the main reasons why you hunch over the keyboard – there is simply no reason to maintain proper posture unless you physically force yourself to do so at a desk chair.
Using a kneeling chair results in your core muscles being used to keep you upright rather than relying on something else and this helps to develop their strength and ability over the time frame that you’re using the chair for.
Some of the different muscles that will get strengthened include your abdominals, lower back, upper hip, obliques, and all of the small muscles and joints throughout the spine area.
Eventually, as they get stronger and stronger, it becomes more comfortable to sit using a kneeling chair and you’ll start to wonder why you didn’t start using one sooner.
Better Performance at Work
When you’re sitting at work in an uncomfortable position and you have pain in your shoulders or lower back it’s unlikely that you’re going to be able to work very hard without getting distracted by the constant throbbing or persistent pain that you’re feeling.
Better posture helps to improve airflow as well as helping you mediate the different issues that you’re suffering from from sitting down all day and this is going to result in you working without distraction and more efficiently.
You’re bound to feel better about yourself and you’ll definitely have better concentration so you’ll be able to get more work done at a more efficient level without the continuous distraction of pain or nagging soreness.
These are some of the more popular benefits of kneeling chairs that I covered in this post today and along with using a kneeling chair there are plenty of other different ergonomic devices that you can use to help alleviate pain and make your life easier.
